State Sen. Kurt Schrader earned the Democratic nod in Oregon’s Fifth Congressional District in a landslide victory Tuesday night.
The senator from Canby bested his closest rivals, Steve Marks of Turner and Nancy Moran of Oregon City, collecting 54 percent of the vote with more than half of all precincts in the district counted. Marks and Moran were both running just below 20 percent.
“It’s pretty overwhelming, I could not have expected that margin of victory in a Democratic primary,” Schrader said Tuesday night from the Willsonville Best Western Hotel, where his campaign gathered to watch results.
Schrader will likely face Lake Oswego Republican Mike Erickson, who was pulling ahead of Salem attorney Kevin Mannix after a bitter primary that featured a feud over Erickson’s role in a woman’s abortion.
Schrader said the bitter Republican race can only help him in November.
“I think it does [help]. I’ve been campaigning on the issues,” Schrader said. “And what’s the other side’s message?”
