Speaker of the House Dave Hunt, D-Gladstone, and House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna, R-Roseburg, will discuss Ballot Measures 66 and 67 during a Nov. 12 breakfast event in Oregon City.
The measures deal with tax increases and changes passed during the 2009 legislative session.
Measure 66 deals with the increased tax on households that make more than $250,000 or individuals who make more than $125,000. It also eliminates income taxes on the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits received in 2009. The increased taxes are estimated to raise $472 million to maintain funds currently budgeted for education, health care, public safety, other services.
Measure 67 increases the state's current $10 corporate minimum tax, establishing a $150 minimum tax for most businesses or a minimum tax of approximately 0.1 percent of total Oregon revenues for some corporations with more than $500,000 in Oregon revenues. Legislators estimate it will raise $255 million to maintain funds currently budgeted for education, health care, public safety, other services.
A yes vote on the measure upholds the tax increases and a no vote rejects the changes. The special election on the measures is on Jan. 26, 2010.
The breakfast is sponsored by the North Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce and takes place at Rivershore Restaurant, 1900 Clackamette Drive in Oregon City (across from Oregon City Shopping Center) and the public is welcome.
“We really want this to be community attending,” said chamber CEO Wilda Parks.
Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. with the program kicking off at 8 a.m. and concluding at 9 a.m. Reservations are $12 for members and $17 for non-members may be made online at www.yourchamber.com, or by calling the Chamber office, 503-654-7777.
Just remember, Dave Hunt, Speaker of the House ran unopposed in 2008. There will be an alternative to vote for this time. If you live in his district please consider this when you vote. Dave Hunt led the Democrats in raising gas taxes, raising taxes on corporations (many of which are small businesses), raising personal income taxes, and taxing your health insurance!
All during a recession with unemployment over 10%. Is that the right course for our state's economy?

Absolutely incredible! It isn’t enough that the Oregon economy is down, Now the North Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce is kicking Oregonians by making public involvement in the discourse a matter of being able to pay for the $17.00 Breakfast Plate. How elitist of them! How many unemployed Oregonians will pony up for the cost of travel and breakfast to listen to a bunch of ‘maybes’?
At the very least, Oregon leadership could have the decency, courage, spine or whatever other portion of anatomy it lacks, to tell the constituency, face to face, that they think Oregon voters are a bunch of dumb sheep. It is well passed time to show the 20+ year status quo government in Oregon the door. Public employment and government services have become the new welfare state. Why should Oregonians be held hostage by Public Income Indemnification Associations like teachers lobbies or the SEIU503?
No thinking person would deny that government, of the people, by the people and for the people is good for the people. Oregonians have seen the results of the feeding frenzy at the public trough that is funded less by the diners and more by the people who are going hungry or leaving Oregon.
How progressive is it to continue attracting people to Oregon through public assistance and other freebies when there are no jobs to transition newly arriving strays to? Are we Oregonians to pride ourselves on our ability to limit our carbon footprint by cannibalizing our resources? How is it that if the state of Oregon comes knocking on the citizens door, the citizen has no option but to allow themselves to be turned upside down and inside out but Oregon government can play a shell game with money that came from tax payers, if there is even money in the state coffers that isn’t a debit receipt to begin with?
What we Oregonians are faced with are the results of progressive policies which aren’t.

Wouldn't it be nice if they were talking about how to get jobs to this state?
The last time our legislature ran the economy into the ground, they opened the land use floodgates and substituted uncontrolled growth for economic diversity. This left our schools, public safety, and transportation completely underfunded.
Now, we're raising taxes in a recession-that wouldn't even float in a college level econ class.
We seem to be at the mercy of complete idiots.
