Mustangs hope to be more competitive

Coach Maynard says that attitudes have improved and the talent level is a little better

MILWAUKIE – Milwaukie third-year coach Frank Maynard believes the Mustangs will be improved in volleyball in 2009.

But because Milwaukie plays in one of the toughest league’s in the state, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mustangs will put a lot of games in the win column.

“Our goal is to win a league match – which is something that hasn’t happened in more than six years – and compete in every match,” said Maynard.

“I think the team has a little more talent,” Maynard added. “And they have a better team attitude. I think they’ll play better together than last year.”

The Mustangs are young. Angela Arnett (5-5 defensive specialist) is the only senior on the varsity roster.

And they don’t have much size. Freshman Alexis Noren (5-9 middle hitter) is the tallest player.

Arnett, junior Alana McVay (5-5 setter) and sophomores Rachel Getty (5-7 outside hitter) and Amandakae Blauser (5-6 setter) return from last year’s varsity.

Rounding out the roster are: juniors Whitney Wolfe (5-0 defensive specialist), Lexi Lathrop (5-7 outside hitter) and Katie Searls (5-5 outside hitter); sophomore Autum Krumm (5-6 outside hitter) and freshman April Meads (5-8 middle hitter).

The Mustangs host Madison on Thursday, Sept. 10, in their season opener. They begin Three Rivers League play on Sept. 15 at Clackamas.
