La Salle’s girls soccer team bagged a pair of wins last week to continue unbeaten in the Capital Conference.
La Salle’s third-ranked boys team wasn’t as fortunate. The Falcon guys got upset by unheralded Estacada 2-1 on Sept. 22. They bounced back with a 7-1 trouncing of Cascade last Thursday, nonetheless the loss to the Rangers could prove costly in the conference boys soccer title chase.
La Salle girls upped their conference mark to 3-0-0, defeating Cascade 1-0 and Estacada 2-0.
Senior Stephanie Socotch was the heroine in last Thursday’s game with the Cougars. Her 26-yard shot over the head of Cascade keeper Tiffany Klages less than 10 minutes into the game was the game’s only goal.
“Stephanie helped the team achieve our team goal of starting the game quickly and with intensity,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “We wanted to set the tempo early and score in the first 15 minutes. After her score, the team had difficulty finishing. We had plenty of chances, but couldn’t connect.”
The Falcons out-shot the Cougars 17-1. Goalie Natalie Byrne earned the wins in both the Cascade and Estacada games.
Cereghino praised Carly Christoferson and Elise Christoferson for their role in the shutout of the Cougars: “They both made smart, quick runs and helped create many of our offensive opportunities.”
The Falcons had problems finishing in their 2-0 win at Estacada. They fired off 28 shots, but only second-half attempts by Kat Werner and Carly Christoferson found the net.
Werner scored off a pass from Emily Basile with under 15 minutes to play to break the scoreless tie. Christoferson clinched the win three minutes later, scoring off an assist from Werner.
“The players created numerous scoring opportunities,” said Cereghino. “They made much better runs, passes and crosses, but just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”
Byrne made four saves.
“Natalie made a great save at the end of the first half to keep the game tied,” said Cereghino. “The defense was caught looking for an offside call, but Natalie prevented Estacada from capitalizing on the opportunity.”
“Kat’s goal picked up the intensity of the whole team,” Cereghino said.
La Salle coeds (3-3-0, 3-0-0) host Stayton this Thursday and they meet Gladstone on the road next Monday.
Andy Hilsenkopf was the only La Salle player able to find the net when La Salle boys lost to Estacada 2-1 on Sept. 22. Dayne Hohensee and Alex Richards scored for the Rangers (1-3-1, 1-2-0).
Six different La Salle players scored in the first half of last week’s 7-1 rout of Cascade. First-half goals were scored by Blake Symonds, Anthony Karin, Ryan Kain, Steven Zychla, Ian Ortman and Dakota Eisel. David Leslie scored in the second half to round out the scoring.
La Salle boys entered play this week with a 2-1-0 record in the Capital Conference and an overall record of 4-2-0.
