ESTACADA – Gladstone’s youthful girls soccer team continued on track last week, defeating Estacada 4-1 in their only Capital Conference game and running their conference record to 4-0-0 (5-0-1) overall.
The Gladiators were up 3-0 after just 22 minutes of play, and Gladstone coach Steve Thomas cleared his bench a short time later.
“I played 18 kids and most of them played at least 30 minutes,” said Thomas. “We’ve been able to play everyone in all our league games so far.”
Sophomore forward Haleigh Murrell turned her first half trick of the season, scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes of play and a third tally near the midpoint of the second half.
Freshman forward McKenna Hopkins also found the net in the first half.
Freshmen Amber Jensen and Madison Cronin, sophomore Ashley Beykovsky and senior Jessica Hopkins were all credited with assists.
Thomas singled out Hopkins: “Jessica controlled the center of the field.”
Thomas said the margin of victory would have been greater except for the standout play by Estacada’s goalie.
“They’ve got a very good goalie. Her hands were like glue,” Thomas said.
