CLACKAMAS – The Clackamas Cavaliers rallied around their defense and a strong inside game to dispatch with St. Mary’s (72-58) and Forest Grove (42-23) in preseason girls basketball games last week, as they upped their record to 4-0 on the yet-young season.
The Cavaliers held Forest Grove to just four points in the first half, as they took charge from the opening tip-off.
“MacKenzie Owens and Natasha Rowland did a real nice job on their big kid,” said Clackamas coach Ken Trapp. “She scored only one point in the first half.”
Trapp said the Vikings’ strategy was to run their offense through 6-1 post Val Bongiorno in a very deliberate half-court game. Bongiorno finished with only eight points on the night and much of her scoring came late in the game, after the contest had already been decided.
Clackamas freshman guard Deeshyra Thomas caused the Vikings headaches with her aggressive defense play. She had six steals in the Cavalier victory.
“I’m very excited about [Thomas] and how she plays,” said Trapp. “She was all over the place, disrupting what they were trying to do.”
Clackamas 6-2 junior post Jen Reese played a strong game on the inside, scoring a game-high 14 points and hauling down 11 rebounds.
Junior wing Shelby Mauermann (11 points) also reached double figures in scoring.
“Shelby had a breakout game,” said Trapp. “She scored, played defense and did a real nice job penetrating to the basket and creating things.”
