FOREST GROVE – Last weekend was a tough weekend for Milwaukie High’s girls basketball team, as the Mustangs dropped a pair of games in a tournament at Forest Grove.
After losing to the host Vikings 39-33 on Friday, the Mustangs got blown out by Westview 59-36 on Saturday.
Milwaukie coach Kevin McElroy said the Mustangs missed freshman playmaker Alexis Noren (finger injury) on Saturday.
“We missed Alexis,” said McElroy. “She helps a lot with relieving pressure and opening up things for her teammates. She does a lot for the team that other players on the team can’t do.”
McElroy said that Westview used aggressive defensive play to take charge of the game from the outset.
Lindsay Kanalz (12 points) and Nicole Hannifan (10 points) led Milwaukie in the losing effort with the Wildcats.
The Mustangs let the game with Forest Grove get away from them. Milwaukie was up 18-14 at halftime.
“It was mental,” said McElroy. “They didn’t play with the same intensity in the third quarter. I think they figured when they came out after halftime that they’d already won it. They didn’t work as hard [in the second half].”
Hannifan (11 points) and Ashley Serdar (10) were Milwaukie’s offensive leaders.
