MILWAUKIE – Rex Putnam’s girls basketball team put another game in the win column on Dec. 22, defeating Madison 57-43.
The Kingsmen had the game in hand at halftime, leading 32-23. They would have won by an even bigger margin, except they struggled from the free throw line, making only 10-of-27 attempts.
“They played hard for four quarters,” said Putnam coach Lisa Vetter-Serafin. “We’re still inexperienced, but we’re getting better. We played good defense. We forced a lot of turnovers.”
The Kingsmen had balanced scoring, with Jamie Galbreath (15 points), Megan Malvick (14 points) and Jeannie Hoyt (13 points) all reaching double figures.
Hoyt had a hot hand from the outside, cashing in three times from beyond the arc.
“They’ve still got a huge hill to climb,” said Vetter-Serafin. “But they’re learning from their mistakes and getting better every time out. I’m very proud of them.”
The Kingsmen (3-2) have been playing in the Lake Oswego Shootout since Sunday. The tournament concludes today.
Putnam boys put one in the win column on Dec. 22, staging a late-game rally to drop Madison 54-46.
Trailing 35-33, the Kingsmen outscored the visiting Senators 21-11 in the fourth quarter.
Cole Helgerson (14 points) and Brandon Sherier (12 points) led a balanced Kingsmen attack.
