OC tankers are tough at state

They swim in 16 races and come through with 16 lifetime bests

ALBANY – Three young athletes from the Oregon City Swim Club did themselves proud at the Oregon Swimming Long Course 10-and-under Championships, held here July 10-11.

Ryan Casey, Kate Laderoute and Maddie Laderoute competed in the meet, and all three brought home medals.

“I was blown away by a few of their races and incredibly proud of them for what they did in all of their races,” said Oregon City Swim Club coach Ben Talbott. “They swam in 16 races and had their best times 16 times. It’s rare to PR in every race, and to do it in a championship meet makes it that much sweeter.”

Nine-year-old Kate had the greatest success. She swam six races in the 9-and-under division and won five medals, placing in the top six in five events.

Kate started the meet like a house afire, swimming the 200-meter freestyle in a 20-second PR of 3:00.77, good for fifth place.

And Kate closed out the state championship meet strong, finishing runner-up in the 100-freestyle in a five-second PR of 1:20.27, for her highest placing of the meet.

Kate also placed third in the 200-individual medley in a 16-second PR of 3:19.09, fourth in the 50-butterfly (41.33), and fifth in the 50-freestyle (36.69).

Maddie earned a fifth-place medal in the 10-and-under 50-breaststroke (46.71). She also made sectional qualifying with an effort of 1:41.45 in the 100-breaststroke, good for seventh place. Maddie competed in six races, turning in lifetime bests times six times.

“Sectional qualifying was one of Maddie’s season goals,” said Talbott, “so that was great for Maddie.”

Ryan competed in four events and placed sixth in the 50-butterfly in a six-second PR of 48.74. He also came close to medaling in the 50-backstroke, where he turned in a six-second PR of 49.18, good for seventh place.
