CLACKAMAS – Clackamas High School’s top summer baseball team, the Outlaws, has been having a pretty good run.
Through play last Friday the Outlaws sported an overall record of 17-7-1 and a 9-3 record in the OIBA Baseball Olin Division. They were tied with Wilsonville in second place in the division – behind Westview – with only a doubleheader with Central Catholic remaining.
They’ll play in a home-and-away, best-of-three series with a yet-to-be-determined opponent Saturday through Monday, July 24-26, with the winner advancing to the OIBA Championship Tournament.
“We’re doing better than I expected,” said Clackamas coach John Arntson. “We’ve been pretty good at the plate. We don’t hit the ball hard, but we’ve been great at small-ball. We can bunt the ball, we can hit and run, and we can run the bases. We’ve got pretty good team speed.”
Arntson said that leadoff hitter and centerfielder Matt Calhoun has been leading the team at the plate with a batting average close to .400.
He said that infielder Cooper Mickelson and catcher Sam Burns are both hitting around .375, and outfielders A.J. Peterson and Jaret Moss both have pretty good averages, as does utility player Nick Hays.
In games last week, the Outlaws swept a doubleheader from Tigard, winning 12-4 and 6-4, and they bounced North Marion 16-6. They punished the ball for 40 hits in the three games.
