PORTLAND – Tim Salyers of Milwaukie, has been honored by Friends of Baseball and the Portland Beavers as their 2010 Youth Baseball/Softball Coach and Volunteer of the Year.
Salyers received the honor and a check for $1,000 at a Portland Beavers baseball game on Tuesday (July 20).
Salyers, 30, who works as code compliance coordinator for the City of Milwaukie, has served as a volunteer coach and officer with the Milwaukie Junior Baseball Association for the past 12 years.
“I was shocked [when I learned I was going to receive the award],” said Salyers. “I didn’t even know I had been nominated.”
“The Coach and Volunteer of the Year awards serve to recognize those who have demonstrated exemplary efforts in their ability to promote good sportsmanship and fair play, have a favorable basic attitude towards the game and players, all the while offering quality instruction and support,” Friends of Baseball said in announcing that Salyers was to receive the honor.
The current president and coaches’ coordinator for MJBA, Salyers has also served as scheduling coordinator, fundraising chair and rookie ball coordinator for the association. Earlier this month his Junior American (ages 11-12) team finished runner-up in the Clackamas County Junior Baseball championship tournament.
In describing what the award means to him, Salyers said, “It’s huge! I think it’s such a great honor and there are so many people deserving. It makes all the hard work worthwhile…. I should be doing more, but I’ll take it.”
